Frequently asked
What certifications do Tuft & Needle mattresses hold?
The foams used in all mattresses sold on our website are tested and certified by CertiPUR-US®, a 3rd-party foam certifier, to be free from known harmful chemicals and gasses. More specifically, our foams are tested to be free from ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates, and low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
For more information, check out CertiPUR-US®'s website HERE.
We also have the UL GREENGUARD Gold Certification for the entirety of the mattresses. GREENGUARD Certified products aid in the creation of healthier indoor environments, and release fewer pollutants that can contribute to health issues including asthma and other respiratory issues. This GREENGUARD label validates that the mattresses sold on our website are low-emitting and support healthy indoor environments. UL is a global independent safety science company with more than a century of expertise in innovating safety solutions.
What are the frame requirements for Tuft & Needle mattresses?
Tuft & Needle mattresses are designed to be compatible with most frames an foundations. The most important factor in finding a frame or foundation for your mattress is even surface support. Platform frames, slatted frames, box springs, bunky boards, and even adjustable frames will work well with our mattress. If you decide to go with a slatted frame, make sure the space between the slats is no more than 5" apart.
Here are some guidelines about using specialty frames:
Bunk beds or Murphy beds: We recommend double-checking the manufacturer's dimension requirements. For example, most bunk bed frames only accommodate mattresses up to 8" thick.
Trundle beds: It's important to check the clearance required by the trundle (is it enough for the mattress?) as well as the support provided by the trundle. If there is no solid support under the trundle bed, our mattress will not work well.
Hospital Bed Frames: Our mattress fits some adjustable hospital bed frames. Many are standard twin or twin XL sizes, but some are custom sizes so it's important to measure the frame (or refer to the frame dimensions) to make sure it will fit.
Note: Our mattresses are not intended to be used in place of hospital beds and can be a great option for people who are not bedridden or at risk for pressure ulcers.
Not recommended:
Futons
Plywood (or any unfinished wood)
Sofa Beds
Waterbed Frames
Do I need to flip or rotate my mattress?
We recommend rotating your T&N mattress every 6 months or so to ensure a more even break-in over time, but there's no need to flip the mattress as the mattress has been designed to have a specific top and bottom. Always keep the zippered side down for optimal comfort.
Can I remove the mattress cover for cleaning?
Our mattress covers are NOT meant to be removed. Zippers on covers are only there to help our manufacturers put on the cover, and the zipper is clipped to prevent removal. Because the cover cannot be removed, we recommend spot-cleaning it when needed. We suggest using a small amount of mild detergent and water and gently dabbing the cover, rather than rubbing it. Make sure the cleaned area is completely dry before placing sheets and blankets back on the mattress.
Does my mattress require a box spring?
No, a box spring is not required. Our mattresses are very versatile, so most any form of support will work: platform frames, slatted frames, bunky boards, and even adjustable frames will support our mattresses without requiring a box spring. If using any form of slatted support, the space between individual slats needs to be fewer than 5"; otherwise, the mattress can start to sink through the gaps and create a feeling of sagging.
Can I use my mattress on the floor?
You can definitely use your mattress on the floor. For the best care if you live in a humid climate, we highly recommend that you use a bed frame or bunky board that lifts the mattress off the ground.
Can I use a heating pad or electric blanket?
Using a heating pad or electric blanket on your Tuft & Needle mattress won't cause any long-term damage to the foam or void the limited warranty coverage.
How do I get urine out of the mattress?
Soak up extra liquid using 4-5 layers of paper towels: Apply pressure to the spot on the mattress to absorb as much liquid as possible. Repeat this as many times as necessary. Spot-clean the area with baking soda, vinegar, or mild detergents. The vinegar and baking soda will help remove unwanted odors. We recommend making sure the cleaned area is completely dry before placing sheets and blankets back on the mattress.
NOTE: The built-on mattress cover is NOT meant to be removed.
